Art Class Products Reveal Possibilities

Jasmin Villalpando, Reporter

The examples below, along with the teacher statements, highlight what you can learn in each of Leyden’s art classes.

Ms. Lynette Rosen – Advanced Art Teacher

Advanced Art : “I think Advanced Art is a great class for a student who have taken a couple semesters of 2D art classes. Students learn advanced drawing and painting techniques and art secrets so they can continue to improve their art skills. Students have more freedom in their projects so that they have more control over the type of artworks they would like to create. Hailey Heard created this lovely charcoal drawing by observing a little pile of shells. Advanced Art really helps student become sophisticated artists.”

Ms. Lynette Rosen – AP Studio Art Teacher

AP Studio Art: “AP Studio Art is a great way to earn AP credit while creating something you enjoy! In this class you can work on any media; Photography, Ceramics, Graphic Design, Painting, Drawing, Sculpture, or even a combination of all of them. There is no final test at the end, like other AP classes, you submit your artwork at the end of the year for review. There really is a lot of freedom to create the type of artwork you would like. Elizabeth uses her drawing skills and creativity to make awesome original pieces like these two.”

Mr. Bill Krypel – Ceramics Teacher

Ceramics: “I believe that students enjoy Ceramics so much because at a time in their lives when everybody is telling students who they should be, Ceramics allows students to discover, on their own, who they are really becoming. Additionally, Ceramics allows students to challenge themselves at their own pace and to be amazed at what they are able to accomplish when they take a risk. Sarah chose to make a wizard for her sculpture assignment, and it turned out great. Magdalena made a soap holder for her sculpture, but added a twist to it, by making a frog. Joanna went above and beyond with her vase project, it turned out amazing. Natalie made an adorable little snowman teapot.”

Mr. Steve Lappe – Art Survey Teacher

Art Survey: “In Art Survey students work with ceramics, painting, drawing, photography and even graphic design, it’s a nice introduction to all that is offered in the Art Department. Art Survey appeals to students who want to see if they like three dimensional art or two dimensional art. Some students would like to work with computers to create images, and see if they could sustain their interest over a semester. Annahi Herrera took this photograph and designed this amazing photo. Alan Lopez used graphic design to make this spectacular piece of Eminem. They both had the freedom to make whatever they want, and they both did a great job!”

Mr. Steve Lappe – Photography Teacher

Photography: “Photography class offers students an opportunity to take a class in a subject that they are familiar with and can hone their photographic skills. In addition to working with and understanding the camera, students are introduced to Adobe Photoshop where they can edit and manipulate images.  Students enjoy the opportunities that Digital Photography offers such as working outside and in the studio setting, that are different from the more academic course rigger. Bill Powyszyski captured this amazing photo, he did a great job with this assignment.”

Ms. Anna Reed – Drawing Teacher

Drawing: “I always hear students say, ‘I can’t draw’. That is exactly what we are here to teach you to do. Drawing is a skill that can be learned in the same way that you can learn a language. The self portraits show what the students could do at the beginning of the semester and then how their drawing skills improved at the end of the semester. The self portraits were drawn by looking in a mirror, not using a photograph.  It is much easier to draw from a picture, so these students have really learned how to see and draw well.”

Ms. Anna Reed – Painting Teacher

Painting: “The painting class takes you step by step through how to see and create like an artist. Each project is different and each project will help you learn a new skill. Besides that, they are really fun, and everyone should have some fun in their schedule. The paintings are only the second painting these students have ever done.  They looked at a famous artist, such as Van Gogh, and tried to copy not only the exact colors but also the brushstrokes. There is a hidden piece from the original. Can you find it?!”
