Concussions and Sports Related Injuries

Currently, I am reading the book League of Denial: The NFL, Concussions, and the Battle for Truth by Mark Fainaru-Wada and Steve Fainaru. I chose this book because I played football for 4 year and have gotten a total of 3 concussions playing sports. This book is a way to learn about the dangers of playing contact sports like football and what multiple blows to the head does to a brain and body.

This book is not only informative of the dangers of concussions, but it tells the story of Mike Webster, a Hall of Famer whose brain revealed the damage constant blows to the head do to the brain. When he died, his brain was analyzed by specialists to reveal major brain damage caused from repeated blows to the head while he played in the NFL. When this information came out, the NFL denied that players health was in danger from playing the sport. USA Today recounts that time in this article (Link at bottom of page). This since has changed and the NFL just settled a $765 million settlement with former players whose health has been effected by playing football (Link at bottom of the page). The book is just getting into the details of the concussion battle, which should be interesting to read.
