Skills USA Club’s Latest Project Is Go-Karts

One club at Leyden offers students the opportunity to build a machine from scratch. SkillsUSA is that club which lets its members work with their hands.

Currently the club is working on a go-kart project which, according to adviser and industrial tech teacher Joe Shilts, was chosen in the students’ interest, and combined the different areas of technology that Leyden offers. This project gives students a chance to build a vehicle from the frame up using the skills that they know.

The club is mainly aimed toward Leyden students who are taking industrial tech classes.

The club leader, Mr. Shilts said that the main purpose of the club is, “To learn about different careers and learn the professionalism of those careers.”

Toward the end of the school year students will start preparing for the qualifications to the SkillsUSA competition. If the students pass the qualifications, they will be given the opportunity to participate the state competition in Springfield.

Winners of the state competition get a chance to compete in the nationals, in addition to winning scholarships, and sometimes tools and t-shirts.

Mr. Shilts has been leading the club for 6 years now, two of which were at East.

The club normally meets every other Wednesday. If you are interested in joining the club see Mr. Shilts in room 128.
