Fashion Industry Fail

According to Health magazine, “only 3% of female TV network characters are obese, while 25% of U.S. women fall into that category.” This shows that the people shown on television aren’t even close to looking like what women in reality look. Most of the audience that are watching these television shows are wishing they had the figures that women have and wish they had all the physical features that they have. The magazine industry doesn’t help either, using photoshop to “fix” how their models appear. They fix their bodies and their appearance giving a false sense of what’s real and what’s not.

Focusing on how the models look only gives a negative effect to anyone who tries to compare themselves to them. They try their hardest to get the body shape that they have. They start to diet and if that doesn’t get them to the weight they want, eventually most people after trying hard to get the shape they turn to not eating or purging, which eventually leads to eating disorders. Their problems only get bigger. Although they may not be focusing completely on who are on the covers of magazines or on t.v, the media and all that definitely has some part in eating disorders and how a person’s self esteem goes down.

One major concept on why the media has a big part in this whole topic is that what they see isn’t realistic. The covers of magazines and the pictures of models inside it are manipulated into something that isn’t true. Those looks everyone sees. the bodies models have, aren’t realistic.

Models have their lifestyle, which is one that regular people shouldn’t try to follow. They have their own diets for their life because it’s their job to look like that. “In those media, happy successful people are almost always portrayed by actors and models who are young, toned, and thin. The vast majority are stylishly dressed and have spent much time on hairstyles and makeup.” Those actors need help to looks as attractive like most people think. They have professionals helping them achieve the look they want. People like us can’t and don’t have those professionals to help us get the style and look how we want. Most of us also don’t have personal trainers to help get out bodies in shape like celebrities, models, and everyone else that has to do with that industry. That’s why some in the fashion industries fight back saying it’s not their obligation or the model’s to try to help people or promote healthy body images. “The Fashion Industry’s goal has never been to make women feel good about themselves,” one insider argued. In a way I agree, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have to keep everyone else in mind, while they give people false hope and images about body types.

Since we don’t have those opportunities we turn to the easiest way we can get fit. But don’t you see what it can sometimes lead to? With all these eating disorders, people feel the need and pressured to try it at least once. Then they realize if they keep doing it they’ll get the body they want. But in reality this is not the direction to go through. It can lead to a sickness that eventually gets hard to control. It’s hard to stop and most of the times, it leads to death. Is that how you want to end up? Dying because you give in to the pressure that the media does in fact cause? It’s not the best idea and that’s why I chose to argue against people that say the media isn’t to blame. Sure, they may not intentionally do it, but they’ve gotten so many people putting blame on them that they should realize what the people are talking about. Luckily, some are helping. One company in Spain, at the annual Cibeles Fashion Show in Madrid, banned models that were underweight from participating. Other companies should follow their lead, realizing that promoting healthy bodies is a responsibility of the fashion industry.
