Coaches vs. Cancer Game Features Spencer Hawk Fundraiser

The varsity boys basketball team is currently at a 8:6 record, and last week’s Friday night game against Willowbrook also served as a fundraiser known as the “Coaches vs. Cancer” game with all proceeds going to the Spencer Hawk Benefit.

The Spencer Hawk benefit was created for the grandson of a west maintenance worker. Spencer has a rare type of cancer called Thoracic Neuroblastoma.

This year’s “Coaches vs. Cancer” game had the boys basketball players along with the Leydenettes going around the school this past week trying to get students to donate money for this great cause.

The Spencer Hawk Benefit was able to raise a lot of money thanks to the support of everyone who made it out to the game.

Friday night’s game also marked a big victory for the boys as they prepared for their match against Universal High School the very next day for a rare Saturday afternoon game.

The boys seemed to have an easy victory with a 76-29 win over the suburban school which highlighted the boys’ many strengths.

“Our biggest strength this year is our leadership and our ability to shoot the 3,” head coach Bill Heisler said.

West senior Junior Watt, who came in during part of the third and fourth quarters, stepped up during Friday’s game with several crowd pleasing three pointers.

“The seniors are tough kids who play hard every day and demand it of the rest of the guys,” Coach added. “Our juniors are maturing and making strides.”

Tonight’s game will have the boys face off against DGS at 7:30 p.m. in the East fieldhouse.
