Safe Celebration Week 2014

Seniors came out victorious as we headed into Spring Break.

Safe celebration week, which aims to promote school spirit along with emphasizing the importance of making safe choices, took place the week before Spring Break and was extremely successful this year.

Like in previous years, each day of the week was assigned designated spirit wear for that day. Monday was pajama day where students came dressed up in their pajamas. Tuesday was twin day and a couple of the seniors dressed in togas that day too. Wednesday was battle of the sexes day so girls wore pink and boys wore blue. Thursday was blue and gold day where students got to show off their school spirit by wearing the school’s colors, and lastly Friday was wear your class color day which lead into Junior Olympics.

Junior Olympics, which took place on Friday, March 28 during 10 period in the fieldhouse, had student volunteers from each class, and even some faculty volunteers, compete against each other in a number of events such as the popular Ho Ho eating contest, hula hoop loop, and 3 legged race.

Each class was encouraged to wear their class shirts which were designed by their class board.

Each class was rooting for themselves to make sure their class won., yet the seniors took the win coming in first place with freshman coming in a surprising second place.

Throughout the week, there were several other events held designed to promote an atmosphere of celebrating safely.

On Thursday, March 27 students were invited to attend the Safe Celebration party which was held at the East Leyden Field House from 6-9 p.m. It included pizza, music and several fun activities such as bouncy houses, face painting, and open gym activities.

It was during the Safe Celebration party that several students, including varsity wrestling coach Fumagalli and his wrestlers, had their heads shaved as part of this year’s St. Baldrick’s fundraising event, which was directed by assistant dean Tim Dykes.

In addition, every year the school has a district wide assembly and invites a special speaker to come and talk to the students as part of the week’s events.

This year’s speaker was Ryan Porter who came and shared his story about how kids these days can make a positive impact on their lives. Through his engaging stories and well timed humor, he tried to reach out to students and challenge them to make a difference in their lives now.

Teachers has had a chance to have their classes attend breakout sessions throughout the week. Sessions offered this year included a session against bullying where students from choir performed a play about bullying, as well as presentations about the awareness of drugs and gang violence.
