Protests and Finger-Pointing

This 2016 presidential election has caused many people across the country to fear the future and protest across the nation. Protesting is acceptable, If you don’t feel safe or think you aren’t being heard, protest. But what those who are unhappy should not do is verbally hate on people who show support to the President-elect Donald Trump.

For one, it goes against the very  beliefs many are upset about: treating everyone equally and not marginalizing specific groups. Now, some of you may not want to hear this, but Donald Trump is taking office this January, and yes, this country seems more divided than ever. But this division didn’t take place only because Donald Trump was voted president. Racial and economic issues existed well before his candidacy and will continue to need to be addressed.

But Hilary is not in any means innocent. She has lied to the federal government over a private email scandal, she also is an advocate for dropping bombs and sending air missiles who have killed thousands and thousands of innocent citizens in middle eastern countries. Did Trump add to the uproar? Yes, I agree that the comments made by Donald Trump are very offensive to many people not just here in America but to anyone. They are uncalled for and not politically appropriate. But right now, anti-Trump protesters are just adding fuel to the fire in this country. By looking at someone who supports Trump and automatically calling them a racist isn’t going to solve this hole that America built and dug deeper in this entire election.

I know some readers got three lines deep into this piece and automatically thought I’m a racist or sexist because I am defending Donald Trump. Protesters are defending their right to have a say in what happens in America, but then look at any Donald Trump supporters and immediately think “racist.” I am just saying that instead of jumping straight to conclusions, ask me why I think Trump would be a better president than Clinton, and I will tell you my reasoning. I am not a racist, sexist, or an anti-immigrationist. I have reasons behind my opinions as does everyone else.

And I’ll be honest, when I see protesters burning flags or threatening police, I have no interest in listening to their message. But I need to. In order to finally make peace between the Trump and Clinton supporters, we have to see each other eye to eye on each issue.

What we need is real discussion. A discussion where each side talks about the issue and why they believe that way. We need to try and understand one another. Rather than fighting and causing a bigger problem, we as citizens of the United States, need to stand together and stop the violence.
