The Perks of Being a Wallflower:

Continued:

Although the main focus of these blogs isn’t really known yet for me, I do think the topic of mental health is one that we should be discussing a lot more than we actually do in school environments or most environments for that matter. With the continual read of this book, regardless of it being fiction, I manage to pick up on the fact that maybe there was something more to Charlie’s ways than just his friend’s suicide. Attachment was something he was trying to prevent. When he began being friends with Patrick and his cousin Sam, he immediately felt a spark for Sam. He was very hesitant to act on his interest knowing Sam was in a relationship and she was a senior while he was a freshman. However, what seemed to stick out the most was his experience at a party with them. He was not aware that he would be under the influence when he walked in but eventually, one of the party members began sort of slipping him edibles. Charlie wasn’t aware that the brownies he was eating were laced and therefore he took a reaction to the drug that was in it. Many of us, this experience would be a calm, soothing thing after a moment of confusion and panic. For Charlie, it remained confusing and his panic seemed to grow. At this time Charlie was described by the group as a wallflower. A wallflower is someone who will attend these social gatherings but will avoid any attention and stand on their own. This anti-social behavior is definitely something to keep an eye out for. After this source, which will be another blog, I think I’ll move on to another source that tackles this issue.
