Mrs. Baker

One of East Leyden newest staff members is Mrs. Jessica Baker, who currently teaches English ll and lll.

She talked about what made her want to teach: “I believe in being somebody I once needed. In high school, I relied heavily on faculty and staff to engage and support me. As a result, I wanted to be a teacher to provide the same level of support I once needed.¨

Every student goes through some hard times during their careers in high school, it could be from not getting enough help to failing because of a hard class. Baker made it clear to us that she wants to be that teacher who is there for students and to help them achieve their goals.

Baker attended Saint Viator High School in Arlington Heights and attended Northeastern Illinois University and received a BA in Linguistics and History Education. She also has an MA in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus on Special Education from National Louis University and an MA in Leadership from Concordia University. She’s also beginning a Ph.D. program at UIC in the spring.

“I believe earning all those degrees was a little challenging,” she said, “but with the support of many people, I was able to work through them.¨

Baker is ready to take on whatever gets in her way and ready to face the struggles and help her students get to where they want to just like they did to her.
