Book Spine and Black-Out Poetry at Leyden Libraries

As the school year inches towards completion and spring approaches, the Leyden librarians have implemented a plan to waive fines through poetry.

The month of April is National Library Month as well as National Poetry Month and with that being said, the media centers have provided students with unique opportunities to express themselves through a special type of poetry called Black-Out and Book Spine Poetry.

Students will be given a piece of text from a random selection and create blackout poetry by blacking out words to piece together a poem that is unique to them.

If your poetry piece is selected as a winner, you’ll be rewarded a Javaccino buck.

Book Spine poetry consists of compiling 5-10 books and using the titles to form a legible stack of poetry- that will be read top down.

For either poetry option, students’ pieces will be displayed on multiple platforms such as Twitter and the Leyden Library’s homepage itself.

Students can also get fines waived by bringing in a nonperishable and unexpired food item, from now until April 30, which will be donated to the Leyden Food Pantry.
