The days are flying by and the end of the semester is near. Co-lab students and teachers are preparing for their most important day of this semester…Exhibition!
On December 4th, at 6pm, the Co-lab students are anxiously waiting in the auditorium for parents to arrive, so they can showcase a project of their choice and bring awareness to all the hard work they put in throughout the semester. They had the choice between a food truck, where they research three different foods, cook them and present them. The second choice was to write and animate a video for an original poem piece. The third option they were given was to research a local environmental problem, and create a solution.
Freshmen, Yabnielys Soto from the poem group, says, “We faced a few challenges because sometimes we didn’t know what to write. We were kind of just blocked on what to write.” The pressure of writing the perfect poem did create a writer’s block for Soto and her peers but they powered through and were able to put the perfect piece together for the perfect night.
“When we were planning the presentation it was fun at first and then after it got kind of boring and then kind of hard at one point.” Says freshman, Zayden Olivo, from the environmental problems group.Even though Olivo and his group were struggling at one point of their project, they still worked hard and put in extra work to make sure they could present the best and most informative presentation about River Groves Trampoline Park.
When you get to the final room which was in the mezzanine, you will see a bunch of tables laid out and at each one you will get three different food items. Each item has a written description, and the students even present what they consist of and where they originate from. Freshman, Dimitar Dimitrov, who was part of the food truck group, also mentioned. “The only challenges we faced was trying not to communicate with our peers and having enough food for all the guests.” Having his group’s food run out so fast must’ve felt great considering students were presenting foods that could potentially not have been everyone’s cup of tea.
“The night has gone well. I was kind of nervous in the beginning but I think it went pretty smoothly.” says Soto, The rooms were packed, parents everywhere so the pressure was high but Soto was able to keep her cool and power through the night smoothly. When you walk into her assigned room you will come across a bunch of stations. You first start with an introduction on what these poem pieces are and where they come from. You will slowly work your way through different stages writing a mini poem as you go. At the last station you will come across Soto, and while listening to her presentation you will learn how to revise your piece and make sure it’s in the best shape for a night like this.
Ethan Kapan, a guest that night, points out,“Something that caught my attention was the amount of effort you could see the students put into their work, everything was well thought out and organized, and the dishes were nicely portioned and delicious!” While you’re walking through the mezzanine you will smell the different delicious foods students have to offer. They range from sweets, to drinks, to savory dinner foods, there were also many vegan options for those who need them.
Dimitrov adds, “The final presentation went well and the feeling we had during the presentation was amazing. We felt accomplishment and a sense of relief because we know that we finished with all the presentations.”
The night flew by but it went amazingly. Parents are proud of their children’s achievements and teachers have to start planning next semester’s exhibition, don’t miss it!
