Teen Rights Blog #2

A important teen rights case that took place was Hazelwood vs. Kuhlmeier. In a Journalism class at Hazelwood East High School, students were responsible for writing the school newspaper. The newspaper included stories about divorce and teen pregnancy. The students did not feature any names, however the principal thought it was inappropriate and prevented the arctics from being published. The students brought the case to the U.S. District Court, clamming that their First Amendment rights to freedom of speech had been violated. The Supreme Court disagreed. The Supreme Court stated that, “Censorship is allowed, especially in a poorly written story, biased, or prejudiced.”
