Eliminating Excuses, Obesity

Coming back from a long day of school or work, nothing sounds better than a piece of cake or candy bar, but eating a piece of cake everyday of the school year will lead to a gain of weight throughout time. Many people don’t deeply understand the harm of getting into bad eating habits. More than two-thirds of the population in the U.S are overweight or obese. They often get themselves into it and use excuses to why they’re eating the way they are eating. Such excuse include the high cost of healthy foods, the effect on an individual’s emotion, or even an excuse as lame as they can never reach an acceptable goal. These excuses shouldn’t be valid for obesity because as a person everyone should be able to control their body.

It is obvious that when we walk through the healthy section in a grocery store, the prices seem to go up and seem unreasonable at some point. For example, a cup of the fruit raspberry can cost about two dollars. But, when we talk through the junk food aisle the prices begin to seem more reasonable. Especially, when we see a big bag of chips that are on sale two for five dollars that can last a long time. A current issue on nutrition state that Americans who live in poverty are most likely to buy the items. A healthy diet usually consist of fruits, vegetable and whole wheat grain. It can easily be more costly than buying a ton of junk food.

The high cost of healthy food will most likely always be a problem to many people around the nation. The overall cost of eating unhealthy overcomes the cost of eating healthy both emotionally and physically. At some point the line of the cost of health and the cost of junk food will meet. The medical expenses will increase if one is constantly eating unhealthy. A current obesity issue suggest, “Medical cost will amount to $336 billion a year in health care cost by 2034 for the estimated 44 million Americans who will have developed diabetes” Many loved ones will have to live with diabetes. Which can be a harmful diagnose and each person has to carefully watch what they eat and do.

Another excuse that society has seen is where one or more people get upset and decide to at. Many people who get sad or emotional go eat junk foods such as ice cream or chips, because a psychological study shows Junk foods have a strong appeal to the primitive and infantile emotions. People chose to eat for appetite instead of health. As kids we became accustomed to our parents giving us candy, ice cream or cookies as a reward for being good. As soon as one starts to take control of their own eating styles they realize that they can have as many junk foods as they want. Each individual will have to learn how to control and balance their food choices.

This excuse won’t work for long because as soon as someone begins to gain noticeable weight they will feel more emotional because of the insecurities each of us have. We’re only human and no one is perfect, but adding something so harmful such as a significant gain of weight, blood sugar, or diabetes can make a person more insecure than they can handle. Each person needs to have control and be the strongest person they can possible be. By eating as someone pleases, they are somewhat being infantile. By taking the step of a healthy eating style one is, in a way, maturing. They are learning to handle themselves in a responsible way.

Reaching a goal is not an easy thing. There are many commitments someone will have to make with making a goal.. For example, when a person decides to save up for a car they have to commit themselves to stop spending their weekly income and devote their money to a bank. The combination becomes overwhelming and the brain gets confused. I understand how much a person has to deal with when making a permanent decision to become a healthy person. Because, being healthy is a lifelong commitment, the person doing so must be 100% sure that’s what he or she want. A major problem is most people expect results very quick. Reaching goals can be complicated and take a lot of work. We’ve all done it before, we set these high expectations and hope to get it done with almost immediate results. It’s true that it get very frustrating when someone feels like they’ve worked all they got and see no improvement.

This is not an excuse. There are many options and opportunities to find ways to follow through a goal. Reachable goals are specific. The brain must know exactly what they are trying to accomplish. According to Dr. Humbert, a great tip is to have goals and accomplishments written. Often, achievers write a short description of their goal every single morning because it reminds them of their priorities. This action can increase anyone chance to succeed.

When we compare quitting smoking and quitting an eating habit, peoples reaction are completely different. Quitting smoking can be related to changing an eating style. They are both habit forming. It may lead to an individual to constantly do it. Both of these things seem to be addicting. Although they affect a person differently, they still are addicting, and when one immediately stops they began to experience withdrawal. We know smoking is unhealthy and we also know that eating junk food everyday is unhealthy as well. Yet, we see smoking as an inexcusable action. Just like smoking, eating unhealthy should be inexcusable.

No more excuses can be used. To stop obesity we need to quit making excuses, take action to have control of our own bodies. We have to start simply by the way we eat, how we spend our money, how we deal with our emotions, and by reaching acceptable goals. Everyone is capable of becoming a healthy individual.
