The Leydenette’s team will be attending their first competition of the year on Saturday, November 23 at Fremd High School in Palatine.

Junior Alyssa Desimone stated, “the season is going well, and there is a lot of positive energy at practice,“ and added how “we are strong in our kick lines.”

It seems as if the Leydenette’s are a stronger and better team this year.

Last year’s competition marked the girls’ return to the competing world in 3 years. While the girls did not place in the top three, they were returning to the competition world with a new, young team.

Head coach Marisa Kapinos returned for her 3rd year of coaching the poms squad, yet last year’s competition was new to everyone on the squad.

“Last year was our first year as a competition squad. We weren’t really positive with what the judges wanted and had to make some changes in between competitions to enhance our routine,” Kapinos said.

“This year we are starting off with a really dynamic routine and some of the team knows what to expect out of the competition season. They have been able to inform the new members on what to expect and that is really helping the team’s drive this year,” Kapinos added.

This season the girls are looking to come back stronger and have been practicing four days a week from 3:45-5:45 p.m. for the past two weeks.

Assistant coach Michelle Marchese is optimistic about the upcoming competition.

“I am excited to see the team in their 2nd year of competition and am looking forward to seeing how they perform!”

This year’s two minute routine, which has a party theme, features several transitions, formation change, ripples, and a longer kick line.

While the majority of the routine was the coaches creation, the girls provided input as well.

“All together it was a team effort,” Marchese said.

Everyone’s hopes are high as they approach competition season and tomorrow’s first competition.

“As coaches, all we want to see is improvement from last year and for the girls to enjoy themselves,” Marchese said. “We can already see that improvement in practice, so as we get closer to the first competition they can only get better!”

“I think the dance is more challenging than previous routines we’ve performed,” Kapinos added. “I’m looking forward to our first competition, so that we can use the feedback from the judges to make improvements for the next competition.”
