Lil Leydenettes Danced Their Hearts Out

Every year the poms squad organizes a special Lil’ Leydenettes clinic for younger students as part of the Junior High night.

After some rescheduling as a result of the weather, the 2014 Lil Leydenettes clinic kicked off during the Friday, January 31 boys basketball game.

From 4:30-7:30 p.m. the Leydenettes were there to help guide the younger girls through all sorts of activities both before and during the game.

Captain Olivia Chadwell went on to explain how the team prepared “a simple dance routine for the girls” which they then taught to the younger girls.

Along with a pizza dinner, the lil Leydenettes took part in a variety of team bonding games before heading up to the gym for their halftime performance during the varsity game Chadwell added.

As part of the $25 participation fee the girls, who were in grades ranging from 3-8, also received a t-shirt which was part of their outfit for the performance.

While additional funds raised go towards supporting the poms squad during their competition season, for the team it’s really just about having fun with the younger kids who come and dance with them.

Head coach Marissa Kapinos loves that this event allows her team the opportunity to interact with the little kids and enjoys seeing all of them performing together.

She also noted how it benefits the younger girls because “it really gets the younger girls excited about not just Leydenettes, but coming to Leyden High Schools in general.”

It was a great learning experience for future Leydenettes because the girls were able to learn a lot of new technique such as dance turns and jumps that they will also use during future performances.
