Leyden Varsity Soccer Wins Regionals

Catrina Sanfilippo, Reporter

The varsity boys soccer team didn’t get a W in the first Sectional Game and has been eliminated from the playoffs. However they provided some memorable regional games for the fans. Here’s a recap of each:

Semi Regional vs. Schurz

In the first 20 minutes, Leyden consistently created plays that were bound to lead to a goal. Sadly, they did not find the back of the net ending the first half with a tie of 0-0. In the second half the boys came out determined to make the game theirs. About 10 minutes into the second half, Christian Sosnowski had a free kick from the left side of the box. He took his time to set up the perfect shot, and he ended up curving the ball and hitting the upper right corner of the net, making the game 1-0.  Later on into the second half, David Senk had a marvelous header of a free kick setting the score to 2-0. Leyden ended the game with a bang. Angel Lopez found himself one-on-one with the Schurz goalie netting a goal and giving Leyden a 3-0 victory.

Regional Finals  vs. Glenbrook South

The boys came onto the field wanting to win. Within the first ten minutes of the game, Angel Lopez took a shot from 25 yards out, and had the fans on the edge of their seats. Somehow the goalie managed to snatch the ball. Sosnowski found himself zig-zagging through three defenders. Meeting face to face with the last defender, the goalie came out and cut off the angle Sosnowski was kicking at. The first half ended scoreless. The second half began and the Eagles didn’t get the ball in the back of the net.  The Glenbrook South goalie made four saves in the box. Fourteen minutes into the second half, Sosnowski took a long, free kick from about forty yards out setting the ball up perfectly for Cesar Franco. As Franco went toward the ball,  he decided to head it in and headed the ball into the upper 90 corner, leaving the goalie with no chance. The scoreboard was 1-0 and throughout the end of the second half as the Eagles fought a hard battle to keep Glenbrook South from scoring. They finished the game with a shutout, and became regional champions.
