While preparing for the first varsity football game, head coach Mr. Tom Cerasani and a couple members of the team shared what they’re doing that allowed for their first win, a dominant 47 to 7 finish against Fenton and a heartbreaking but competitive lost at York on September 4.

Cerasani said, “I feel really good about this year’s team. The goal this year is making it to playoffs, like every year.” Despite this year featuring a young varsity team, having only five seniors starting on offense and defense, Cerasani stated, “The team has excellent attitude.”

football1We also caught up with Steven Gulo and David DeMarais, two of the four varsity captains. We wanted to know more about what it’s like to be a Leyden Eagle football player. “The strongest point of our team is attitude. I’ve never seen kids play with such heart. The juniors have stepped up a great amount and [are] pulling more than their own weight,” DeMarais stated. “Everyday at practice we have one goal: to get better. Everyday we don’t get better is a day wasted.”

One goal of this young varsity team is also bonding: becoming more than just a regular group of football teammates. According to many of them, they got “the sauce.” A handful of the varsity team came up with “the sauce” group. Not many people from the Leyden community know the origin of the phrase, not even the coaches. Mario Leon wouldn’t share that, but he did say, “We’re just a group of close friends, that ride or die for each other. If you mess with one of us we all get involved. We got the sauce.”
