Leydens Girls Track and Field, Have broken school records during the 24-25 Season. In the final stretch of the 4×160, on March 15, 2025 Lillian Kovacevich, Gabriela Sanchez, Valeria Barbosa, Alicja Glowacka broke the school record.
Leyden girls track team, coached by Mr. Durrani are a team of 102 girls and they compete in these following events; 55m, 100m, 200m, 300m,400m, 800m, 1600m, 3200m, 4×100, 4×160, 4×200, 4×400, 4×800,55m Hurdles, 100m Hurdles, 300m Hurdles, High Jump, Long Jump, Triple Jump, Discus, and Shot put. Leyden track is combined of both of their campuses West and East. This leyden track season began on January 20, 2025, the leyden girls have been setting and beating school records. On March 15, 2025, The Sophomore 4×160 group beat the school record of 1:34:46 with the time of 1:34:37. The girls didn’t know they beat the record, they were excited that they won the Junior varsity 4×160.
Being a track athlete isn’t only about the accomplishments of medals and records. The Leyden Girls Track and Field team goes above and beyond. These girls always represent growth, dedication, and the power of teamwork. With over 100 girls working together from two campuses, the support within the team is as important as the races themselves. Breaking records like the 4×160 relay isn’t just about speed. It’s about the hours of training, the trust between the girls, and the belief that anything is possible when you push past limits. For many of these girls, track isn’t just a sport. It’s a space to compete, grow, and make history together.
Głowacka says, “Track has allowed me to grow as an athlete in many ways. For example my coach taught me discipline, how to push myself and respect while my teammates have helped me improve and showed me that I always have someone there for me.” When it came to beating the school record, Barbosa, a two sport athlete, says, “I felt really happy, but it was kind of like we didn’t even know we beat the school record. So we were waiting to see if we did was kind of nerve wracking . We felt very accomplished, a little bit surprised, but we knew we could do it. I was also really tired because I felt like I was gonna pass out.” These girls felt accomplished for not one just beating the record but winning their race and coach Durrani was beyond proud of them. Both Kovacevich and Sanchez said, “he felt really proud, so happy. He was so smiley, he always knew we could do it and we just had to put our hearts in it.”
This is the girls second year in track together, they all have built a beautiful connection with each other and how they run for relays. With records broken, memories made, and bonds that go beyond the track, the Leyden Girls Track and Field team has proven that greatness isn’t just about the finish line.
