The News Behind the News

The East Leyden Journalism class has gained a lot of attention in the past year. The class is now located in a computer lab in the basement, equipped with flat screen dell computers, recording and photography equipment and many opportunities to better provide the Leyden community with up to date information in and around school.

Yet, English Department Chair John Rossi cautions that although all the new toys are beneficial, the actual content still needs to come from dedicated students.

“I don’t necessarily believe that a more professional environment, replete with all of the modern gadgets will result in a finer product. That’s still the responsibility of the student journalists and their advisers.

He added that the equipment will be beneficial in the long run for helping develop the fundamental skills of being a journalist.

“Giving students access to a wide range of equipment and technology should help them develop the jack-of-all-trades mindset that today’s reporters need.”

In today’s world of journalism journalists need familiarity with writing, photography, blogs, video editing, podcasting, and everything else to be competitive.

The senior level journalism class offers students a unique opportunity to hone their skills while still learning valuable content.
