The Leyden Eagles Hockey Club has started off the regular season with a 2-1 record, coming off Friday night’s 5-0 win against the Homewood Flossmoor Vikings.

Forward Jimmy Weichbrodt helped bring the team to victory with two goals along with several other players.

Assistant Coach Mike Monette shared his excitement over the shutout, highlighting how there was “solid team effort, good balance, great goaltending.”

But like any team they are always looking to improve.

“We have to continue to improve as a group and play as a team. That way we can get better each game,” he added.

Coach Monette is hopeful that with their “strong senior leadership, solid defense, and team chemistry,” they will be able to make it to state this year.

Last year the team made it to the playoffs but got bumped out before getting to state.

“We’re in a really tough conference because every team is very well balanced. So we have to win the ISHL [Illinois State Hockey League], get into the playoffs and see where we can go from there.”

While coach applauded senior Jordan Niedziela for his leadership within the team, he cautions that it’s a team effort.

“We don’t look at individuals, we look at the team as a whole. If the team plays as a whole, that’s all you can ask for.”

The Eagles’ next game is Wednesday at 9:00 p.m. at the Franklin Park Ice Arena against Providence.
