As the Leyden girls varsity basketball team prepares for their second round of conference opponents, the pressure is on for the young and aspiring team.

With a 6-16 record overall and 0-9 in conference, coach Drewanne Pancratz noted how, “the girls started the season off extremely well and are improving day by day at practice.”

The entire program is having their second annual World Cancer Night event at today’s game against Morton.

While pushing for their first conference win, today’s game will also showcase performances by both the Leydenettes and the cheerleading team.

Attendees will also be able to purchase baked goods and take part in a Chicago Bulls game raffle.

Even though this year’s team consists of a young roster, they haven’t let their inexperience stop them from defying peoples’ expectations.

The girls made history by starting the season strong and winning 1st place in their Thanksgiving Tournament which hosted four teams, including conference competitor Addison Trail.

Not only did the girls pull out with the tournament win, junior and co-captain Alondra Chavarria received the all tourney award, along with freshmen Artasia Gusman and Autman Mcgee.

Chavarria averages 12 points a game, but during the Thanksgiving tournament she collected a career high of 28 points in their victory over Fenton.

“I worked hard in the offseason to improve my shot,” Chavarria said.

She went on to add how she’s “just more of a versatile player this year opposed to last year.”

Chavarria has demonstrated this versatility on the court, most recently during the January 14 game against Ridgewood where Chavarria had a triple double.

Expectations are high as the girls face off against conference rival Morton during today’s World Cancer event tonight in the West Leyden fieldhouse. Tip off is at 6:30 p.m.
