On Friday, April 11, Leyden students along with students from across the country participated in the National Day of Silence.

This national event is a day of action in which students vow to take part in a day of silence to support the silencing effect that bullying and harassment has on LGBT students in schools.

Students who chose to participate in this event spent their day in complete silence and wore a speaking card around their neck which explained the purpose of the Day of Silence and the reason for their participation.

On Common Ground sponsors Michele Curley and Meg Goins along with club members helped spread awareness by having students and faculty sign fliers throughout the week in the cafeteria. These fliers were hung throughout the school in the hallways as a show of support.

Students interested in showing their support can still take part by posting “Selfies for Silence” in which students take a selfie holding a speaking card that explains why they are taking place in this year’s event, and submitting it to the website http://action.glsen.org/page/s/selfies.
