Happiness #3

Samantha Caputo, Co-Editor-In-Chief

In my last post, I talked about how the different aspects of being happy. Then, while watching tv I saw a commercial for young kids with cancer. The commercial got me thinking about how strong these kids really are. These kids were laughing, jumping, smiling, everything that you could possibly wish to see when you look at a sick child.

Getting into some research, I dug up a few articles talking about Laughter Therapy. Laughter is a contagious emotion that helps people feel happy and Laughter Therapy is the use of humor to promote general health and wellness. The usage of this therapy has been used since the 13th century when surgeons would try and keep patients from noticing pain in surgery. Now this therapy is used in many different circumstances to relieve stress or discomfort.

Studies have shown that there are benefits to Laughter Therapy such as:

  • Boost the immune system and circulatory system
  • Enhance oxygen intake
  • Stimulate the heart and lungs
  • Relax muscles throughout the body
  • Trigger the release of endorphins (the body’s natural painkillers)
  • Ease digestion/soothes stomach aches
  • Relieve pain
  • Balance blood pressure
  • Improve mental functions

The most inspirational part about this to me is where this connects to the Cancer Treatment Centers of America. It’s not just kids either that have the chance to go through this therapy. People of all ages have the ability to be in Laughter Clubs, groups, and more that help patients literally forget that they had cancer for a little bit. Having the ability to make someone feel better just by making them laugh for a few minutes a day can have a huge impact on someones life. Especially if they are like any of the kids in the commercial I watched.
