I Don’t Like Homework, But I Also Think We Need It

Have you ever gotten home on a sunny day, and the first thing you realize is that you have no homework? That you are free to do whatever you want? If you haven’t, it’s a good feeling. But I’ve also had those times when I have no idea what I’m doing on a test because I wasn’t prepared. That’s a “not so good” feeling. While homework may be annoying and tedious sometimes, it can be helpful in some cases, too.

Throughout my years as a student, I have come to realize how much homework has helped me out. Last year I had an Advanced Algebra class, and let me tell you, that class was big on homework. The homework wasn’t easy either (which I expected because it’s math.) It was especially hard the first semester since I had an after school sport which meant I would have to do my work later at night. So I often got mad at all the homework our teacher gave us. But at one point, I realized that the homework was probably the only reason I was passing. The extra practice really helped, especially since classes were online, and it would probably be very hard to cover everyone’s questions.

The Point of Homework

I’m not a homework expert, but I do know that the goal is to teach the student, not to waste their time. I’ve heard the argument that homework takes time away from family time or after school stuff. I get where this is coming from, because like I said, it feels good to go home after school and have some free time. So I understand, but if you are struggling with something in class, homework should not be a waste of time since you’re teaching yourself. It’s only a waste of time if you aren’t understanding what it’s giving you; in which case I would talk to the teacher. Or better yet, study in a way that you are comfortable with.

Homework can be given in the right way and the wrong way. To me, the whole point of homework is to help you understand the material and to help you retain information so that you pass. So if a teacher gives a student homework and it fails to do any of that, she should probably find a different way to help you understand. I also think it would help the students to study something they think they are struggling at.

Homework is often forced upon us because some of us have a harder time being responsible and taking the initiative to study. I personally wouldn’t even know what to study in some cases if homework was not assigned to me. So while it may not be necessary for some people, it might for others. Believe it or not some teachers aren’t aiming to make your life hell; they are just trying to help you. Even if it doesn’t seem that way.
