The evolution of mankind technology has been constantly improving. These past years we’ve seen great improvement in technology. Recognised when color popped up on television exciting the world to the evolution of cellular devices. Now the excitement has died down as a new IPhone comes out every year with unnecessary and useless updates. Like in Leyden and in many more schools, we have taken advantage of the new technology with all students and teachers using computers for most assignments. But that has brought a few struggles for the past years of students cheating using Chat gpt/AI, which is affecting students’ way of learning. Now this makes me wonder if this is how it is now, how will it be in the future?
Like I said the more the years pass by the more technology evolves. These last few years we have seen restaurants and stores change. They went from workers checking out your stuff to you having to do that yourself. Now you go into some stores and there’s no workers to check out your stuff, of course the younger generation has no problem with that but here and there you turn your head and see some older people struggling to check out. Then there’s the restaurant situation where you can order through a screen or sometimes for some restaurants there is a robot that can take your order. Now imagine yourself or a struggling teen/parent trying to get a job to support themselves or their family, but instead artificial technology takes the job that could have been so helpful to them.
The more we keep making these changes the harder it will become for teens to get a job or to socialize even if it’s for a few minutes. The University of Illinois mentions the negative effects that AI can bring, “The integration of AI in education presents several potential negative impacts, including reduced human interaction, algorithmic bias, data privacy concerns, and a potential decline in critical thinking skills and emotional intelligence” (AI in Schools: Pros and Cons).
If you were to look at a student’s computer history you would most likely see Chat GPT on there. Yes it can be a useful tool but do we really need it when we have teachers to help us. It has become a problem not only at Leyden but all over the country. Students have taken a helpful tool and turned it into an easy method to cheat. A survey from Stanford University showed these results “For years before the release of ChatGPT, between 60 and 70 percent of students admitted to cheating, and that remained the same in the 2023 surveys” (Prothero). Students may see this as an easy way to get through high school but once they get into college getting caught using Chat gpt/AI can bring big problems like getting kicked out of college. Overall it’s causing students to not use their full potential and to not even try when it comes to school as they can easily get their work done another way.
It isn’t just cheating though, AI can also be used to do the following, “The British engineering company Arup was the victim of a deep fake fraud at the beginning of 2024, which resulted in a total loss of over USD $25M”( Top 5 Cases of AI Deepfake Fraud ). Criminals are now exploiting AI to their advantage. In this case, it happened to a rich person but it could literally happen to anyone, like those who are close to you. It can get to a point where we won’t be able to tell what is true and what is fake. Like every other man made invention, it’s always made for the good but it ends up being used for the bad.
As we can see AI isn’t just a helpful tool that we can use here and there. It is now affecting us in ways that we would have never imagined whether it’s you, your niece, nephews, parents or in the future it may even be your kids. Instead of helping our generation, it’s actually bringing us down.
