An Artists Interest

If you are artistic and interested to being open to the possibility to exploring a new art type
An Artists Interest

Are you interested in art? Have you ever worked with clay? Do you enjoy having a quiet place to work? Then I think the clay club is the perfect club for you to join!

If it wasn’t obvious by the name, clay club is a club in which gives people the creative freedom they long for to express themselves through the not as popular art form, clay.

Vianey Gonzalez says with soft smile,
”I really like working with, like the clay, and I like the crafts that we have that we like making and stuff”.

Did you know that this club has been around for about 10 years if not more? The dedication as well as interest that students have continued to show in the clay club throughout the years is what has driven Ms. Felix to keep running it.

“It started off as an art club, and then they wanted more and more clay projects, so it reached a point where I couldn’t so easily support both 2D and 3D media, so we split it off. And we had to pilot it for a semester to see if people would be interested in it,” Ms. Felix goes on to say while reminiscing about this student who forever changed things, ”it was a student from the art club that wanted a whole separate thing, Clay Club and we went from there.”

The loyal students who have given their time to be in this club really put out an arm and a leg to be in a club they actually like. If you don’t understand what that means; these students went out of their way to find a club that they’d genuinely enjoy and are not obligated to attend.

Junior Jacqueline Morales goes on to explain, “
It feels more like something I want to do instead of like a club that I have to show up to. It feels like I have the choice to be here.”

There is a big mix of people in this club who really embody the diversity proving further that this may as well be a club for everyone. A mix of freshmen, sophomore, and junior who of course all have different personalities as well as even different perspectives on this club.

”I’d say, this is kind of some more individual work,” Vianey pauses to think about the other people, “…some work with their friends and they bring other people along. So I’d say it depends on the type of person you are.”

Although there are only 7 current members that hasn’t stopped the clay club from being offered at Leyden.

Ms. Felix goes on to say, “As long as students want to come and they keep coming, I’ll keep doing it.”

Although Clay club does not meet as often as your typical after school club, they have decided to follow their own schedule in what works for them.

“We meet once a month and we just stay for a little bit longer till 4 o’clock,” said Ms. Felix.

If this sounds like something that you might be interested in; it couldn’t hurt to shoot Ms. Felix an email to join!
