Mexico’s Corruption
The majority of my of moms family lives in Mexico, throughout their life they’ve learned to not trust the police, no one in their town trusts them either. One day my Tio got beaten up by the police, supposedly my Tio’s brother paid the police to beat him up to teach him a “lesson”. For me this is crazy, the police are there to stop crime not to create new crime. Would you have liked to live in a country where everything’s corrupt? Would you like to live in a country where you can’t even trust the police, the one person to “stop” crimes. Mexico, the country known as “corrupt” for decades. The big question is should we stop this corruption from being a bigger problem than it already is or is it too late.
The first reason why we need to stop corruption is because it’s out of hand and there is no law. Jon French, the head of the Mexico City firm Problem Solvers explains, “What is new in terms of the narcos is that they have the money to buy off the local police force anytime they want to,” He then adds on “You had corrupt police in the past, but not to this extent because you didn’t have such a narco problem.”(Guardian Staff Reporter..) Having to worry about your safety because of narco’s is one thing, worrying about your safety because not even the police who have sworn to protect you and be there for you in times of crisis is the worst. You have no legal form of protection to rely on and the only one you can rely on is yourself to protect and keep you and your family safe, but even then there’s a chance you can’t even do that. That’s not a community or situation anyone wants to live in.
Additionally why we need to stop the corruption in Mexico is because citizens have no trust in their government anymore. For example, Mayra has second hand experience with not trusting the government. Mayra doesn’t trust politicians in Mexico. She says, “Politicians believe they can find a way out of any problem, and they do corrupt things because they know nothing will happen to them.”(Ramirez)Should politicians get away with corrupt things? Or should we just let them go, well this is a big problem right now where people in Mexico don’t trust politicians because they do corrupt things and they get away with nothing happening to them. Shouldn’t politicians be within the law, not against it? In America we expect our politicians to follow and obey the law. In America politicians who do corrupt things do not get away with it, instead they get punished like any other regular citizen. They deserve to be punished right? But what would happen if they didn’t, how would that make you feel? Upset? Frustrated? Well right now as you’re reading this, citizens in Mexico feel they cannot trust their own government after facing many incidents of corruption for years”
Lastly, Mexican citizens are suffering due to the corruption, low incomers lost so much and to know that they can’t go to anyone about this problem. Tovar, a secondary school teacher states, “We shouldn’t have had to pay, so we did a protest, and we were told we would get compensation for what we were owed, but that never came,” she continued.(Ramirez)Think about how you are working a minimum paid job, where you are not getting paid enough, to come and find out that you have to pay double the amount for taxes where the richer pay barely had to pay taxes. Then finding out it was an error in the government telling you that they’re gonna pay
you back the money you spent on checking your mail everyday still working your but off to it not coming in ever.
According to Transparency International 44% of Mexico citizens believe that corruption has increased in the past 12 months. How many people will believe this in the next 10 years, if we don’t put a stop to this now? Would you be the person who just lets it happen? Or be the bigger person and try to stop it.
