She wears light blue baggy jeans, hair slicked back in a pony tail with a hoodie that says
“Jesus Saves”. She has these deep brown eyes. It’s the first thing you notice when you look at her. She has pale light skin like a sunflower. She has that perfectly effortlessly smile on her face that can light up when in a room. She has the Jesus glow, as some people call it.
Sabrina Gasca is a senior at West Leyden and leader of Bible Club. Every Tuesday for the past three years she has dedicated herself into coming to this club, to form new friendships, make some bright loving memories, but most of all learn and grow closer to God. Sabrina has these new amazing ideas for Bible Club. She thinks of new ideas that everyone will like, and will bring people together. Join them in room 153 in the Science hallway with Mr. Hamann.
Everyone has a favorite part of their club. For Sabrina it’s reading the Bible. Sabrina states, “My favorite part of Bible Club is reading the Bible together. We talk about verses, how we feel about them, and how the word reaches out to us. I always read my Bible at home, but it’s even better when we are reading it as a group because we are all on a similar path with Christ. Which makes us have similar questions and struggles. It’s a great place to talk openly and not feel bad about asking questions.”
Sabrina joined Bible Club her Sophomore year of high school. She was afraid of feeling judged by others from going. But taking that leap of faith, she made so many friends in Bible Club. They have shared so many pure amazing memories together. Coming to Bible Club is so fun, they get to do crafts, read together, listen to music, and talk. It’s like a big fun hangout with friends centered by God. Sabrina remarks, “Since Thanksgiving is coming up I wanted to do arts and crafts with everyone! Yesterday, we painted pumpkins of things we are thankful for, we wrote bible verses, ate snacks, listened to Christian music, and talked! We went around in a circle and told everyone what we are thankful for!”
During Bible Club, it’s filled with smiles ear to ear and loud funny laughs. Everyone is so creative when decorating their pumpkins and sharing new ideas. Just talking to people makes a huge difference. Thanksgiving is the time of year to spend time with family and be thankful for things we have in life. Bible Club really illustrates the importance beneath the word Thanksgiving.
Sabrina sighs, “Even having a bad day, coming to Bible Club calms me and guides me to face up to my feelings if I’m stressed, anxious, or angry. I go to Church every Sunday with my family, but Bible Club is a bit different. I hang out with teens closer to my age, we have more open talks, and are going through similar things in life.”
Bible Club helps relieve stress and negative feelings while leaning on to others as well. It brings so many people together in this school. Everyone has their own story in their life, and others don’t know what a person is going through. Joining Bible Club isn’t just learning about Jesus, it’s about finding your place, your people. Sabrina smiles, “When I go to Bible Club it’s my safe place, I don’t feel judged talking about God and Jesus. I feel vulnerable and I feel peaceful when I open my heart to others there. I made so many great friends there, we are all helping each other on this journey with Christ.”
Bible Club is a safe place to talk about anything and everything, Bible Club is here for all. Everyone in Bible Club is so welcoming and sweet; there will never be a bad vibe in there. “I started my Journey with Jesus Christ around eight grade, that’s when I started to take him seriously. I came to this school when I was a sophomore, I didn’t know many people. I wanted
to join Bible Club, but I was a bit nervous since I was new”, Sabrina exclaims.
Sabrina knows how it feels to be in people’s shoes in Bible Club. When it’s someone’s first time there it’s hard, they’re nervous and don’t get some things. Sabrina states that now that she’s serious with God’s journey she can also guide others so they don’t feel overwhelmed. “People have a picture of a perfect Christ follower but no one is perfect. It’s impossible.” Sabrina reminds everyone everyday it’s okay to make mistakes and be scared; God won’t ever hate you for that.
Another member of Bible Club, Kathy had an awesome experience too. “Yesterday was my first time at Bible Club. Everyone was really nice and welcoming. I’ve known Sabrina for years. She’s one of my best friends, she’s always easy to talk to. I’ve seen these familiar faces through the halls and I’ve never known them. You never know who a person is without getting to know them; and I did. It was a wonderful experience”. ” Kathy says with a bright smile. Sabrina’s spiritual steps with the Shepherd shines through West Leyden. But for now, Bible Club will continue blossoming throughout this school.
