As equations fill the test and numbers get punched into the calculator, one student rises above all.Whether it’s physics, chemistry, or biology, he approaches each challenge with the same dedication and passion that have defined his time at Leyden. Well known in the science hallway, senior Piotr Wojtasik has taken every science AP course. Piotr describes science as a crucial subject in his life, helping him eventually in the future to be an engineer. Piotr describes how science forces him to see a learning opportunity in everything citing,”I really, really enjoy the complex mode of thinking. And so everything that I think of, I think of in terms of, what can I learn from this?” That mindset extends beyond school into his personal hobbies. Piotr enjoys playing classical guitar and strategy/ building games. “Engineering is my mode of thinking,” he says. Along with his impressive academics, Piotr balances a job with the Disability Services of America. To balance both, Piotr focuses on discipline and prioritizing what matters. He explains,” You don’t study what you know.” Growing up as part of a strong family legacy, Piotr talks about how this experience puts pressure. “ There’s definitely pressure,” Piotr said. “Everyone is very motivated.” Along with his family, Piotr seeks motivation from his faith. He is a devout Roman Catholic, “And so the idea of the core tenets of Roman Catholicism is to live in glory of God,” he further explains,”This is often a prime drive behind what I do .” Looking ahead, Piotr plans to pursue mechanical engineering. “Yeah, I want to become a mechanical engineer. So science is the path that I’m going.” When asked to give advice for younger students pursuing science courses, he gave straightforward advice. “You have to actually be interested,” Piotr states. “And you have to be willing to work hard.” As equations, responsibilities, and family expectations continue to intersect, Piotr looks ahead with the same drive and curiosity that has followed him. Whether its solving problems or playing Minecraft, Piotr is shaping his future one idea at a time.
