Blazers doom Eagles in first round of playoffs
Addison Trail shuts out Leyden from advancing in the playoffs with their 2-1 win.
Leyden lost a game-time thriller after a double overtime and a penalty shootout against Addison Trail at the October 22 regional game in Elk Grove.
It was truly an electrifying night as the Eagles’ state championship hopes were cut short by the Blazers with the final score of 1-2.
Senior Freddy Suarez stated, “We had them man, we had them.”
After only one goal from each team, they entered a scoreless overtime, which led to a penalty shootout, where the Eagles would lose 3-4 to the Blazers.
Senior and team captain Tony Guzman said, “no matter how hard we hit, they just came back and countered us.”
It was an emotional night for the Eagles, who were favored to win based on state rankings.
Head coach Mark Valintis tweeted “Tough loss in pks [penalty kicks] tonight. Good season ended a bit too soon.”
Although the boys were eliminated early in playoffs, they were rewarded for their outstanding individual performances during the regular season by having one player named all-state, two all-sectional, five all conference, and an honorable mention of senior Hector Arroyo.
