Classroom lights shining from above. The sound of chairs squeaking across the cold floor. Loud voices boom as members enter the room, ready to brainstorm brilliant ideas for upcoming events.
On Thursdays, twice a month, the Class of 2026 Club, sponsored by Ms. Shaw and Ms. Majchrowicz, meets to discuss school events and activities. Students and their sponsors talk about Junior Olympics as well as find ways to raise money and organize different school events. Joanna Woznica, a 4 year participant of the club, says, “I joined the class board to be more involved in school and I wanted to be a representation of the student body.”
She joined the club during her freshman year, wanting her voice to be heard in regards to school events. Many other students that are a part of the club felt the same way. Eventually, they discovered the club, finding a space where they can truly use their creativity to come up with the best junior olympics shirts and games, as well as fundraisers. Joanna explains, “The main purpose of the club is to bring seniors together to organize events.” To add on, 2 year participant Olivia Prokop says, “The main purpose of the club is to make school more fun and get many students involved. It helps plan Junior Olympics and last year we helped plan prom. It gave students the opportunity to voice their opinions.”
The students in the club help organize school events, a main event being Junior Olympics. The club brainstorms ideas for t-shirt themes that the Class of 2026 can buy before the event. The past three years, the themes were inspired by The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Barbie, and Inside Out. When coming up with a t-shirt theme, different ideas that club members come up with are put on a list. Later, students vote on their favorite theme and the one with the most votes gets picked for the event. Last year, the club was assigned to plan another main event for the school, prom. Students in the club got to decide on a prom theme and prom favors that juniors and seniors could take home. For many students, the night was special and their favorite school event. Joanna says, “…It’s a celebration at the end of the year and I get to dress up.” Although the club doesn’t plan homecoming, for many students it is their favorite. Olivia mentions, “…I get to get ready and take pictures with friends and socialize with people from school.”
On occasion, the club gets assigned to come up with spirit week days before one of the school events. This year, the club didn’t get to decide on the spirit week before homecoming. Nevertheless, many of the students in the club love to participate in spirit week days as it gives them an excuse to dress up for school. “I liked the western day because I liked dressing up in a country style,” explains Joanna. Even if the spirit weeks give students the opportunity to express themselves and add more fun into their day, many students don’t participate. Joanna says, “I think that there should be more spirit because it’s a fun way to come together as a student body.”
Despite the lack of school spirit, the club always makes sure to add the most fun and exciting elements into school events. Participants of the club always come up with creative and interesting ideas to make the school events more enjoyable to take part in. If ever given the opportunity, joining the class board is a great decision.
