Last Minute Valentine’s Day Gift Ideas

While doing your math homework, you write your name at the top, then write the date. 02/13/13. Wait. It hits you! Between all the homework, tests, ACT prep, and course selection, you’ve forgotten about Valentine’s Day!

With only one day left to get your special someone something, what do you do? The students and staff at Leyden are here to help you out.

After an extensive survey, here are some quick recommendations on items that you can easily, and possibly cheaply, get for your valentine.

-It seems that chocolates and other kinds of candy were what most people would get their girl or guy on short notice.

Walgreens came highly recommended because many good items are under $10. You can get a bag of Kisses for $6.49, Ghirardelli Squares are 2 for $7, and Lindt Lindor Truffles are 2 for $7 also.

– Another suggestion was to make a card or buy a card. Got some paper and some colored pencils? One Leyden student suggests, you draw your valentine a nice pink heart and then write “I LOVE YOU<3” on the front. Or, let your artistic side show and paint or draw them a picture of you two together.

However, I’d suggest getting a bit more personal. Maybe write an inside joke or meaningful poem inside.

Not creative? Then head over to Walgreens, Jewel, basically anywhere, and pick up a cute Valentine’s Day card. Just don’t forget to write your name on the inside, as one student advised.

– Teddy Bears are always cute. Can you afford to spend some dough? Head to Hallmark and pick up their plush “Sweet on You” bear for $29.95.

Don’t have that kind of money? Go to Toys R Us and you can find a cute teddy bear for as low as $4.99.

Low on cash and need to spend even less? Several people suggested the Dollar Store as it must have something you could offer as a gift. If you’re really strapped for cash, one Leyden student suggests giving an old stuffed animal of yours, especially if you’re really pinched for time.

Other items suggested included:

  • Chocolate Covered Strawberries (Homemade or store bought)
  • Clothes
  • Earrings
  • Gift card
  • Heart Necklace
  • Order their favorite fast food
  • Bake them something
  • Make them dinner
  • Personalized Mix Tape of favorite songs

After a trip to the mall and a few other stores, I found many other things you could pick up your girl or guy.

1. Party City at Winston Plaza has already made balloon and stuffed animal bouquets that range from $5 to $30. They have ones for girls and ones for guys. Party City also had fake flower bouquets, jewelry, and a huge selection of cards.

2. Claire’s at the HIP mall had many items a girl would love. Though they’re cheap, they’re very cute. They have many heart shaped earrings and cute charm bracelets. Plus, most every piece of jewelry was under $15. They also had a variety of Valentine’s Day themed stuffed animals to choose from that were also under $15.

3. Target at the HIP mall has a giant selection of candy. You can pick up a small heart shaped box of Russell Stover chocolates for only $1. For $5 you can get a bigger box of Reese’s, Twix, Milky Way, or Snickers. There are many other heart shaped candy boxes to choose from that are from a variety of candy brands. Prices range from $1 to $30.
