As if being a girl wasn’t difficult enough,  we are also expected to follow certain social norms, and it is assumed that we know them from birth.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I never received a gender handbook that girls must follow in the path of codes that women of the past have paved for us.

In an attempt to fill that void MTV has now provided all young ladies, aging from 15 to 25, a cool “big sister” that will grace you with their knowledge of the code that is supposed to be “wired” in our delicate brains, but must’ve been taken out of the recipe in our generations’ gene pool.

Girl Code, which is a spinoff of the MTV2 series Guy Code, offers some witty and irreverent social guidance for today’s young women from the point of view of other women who are also making their way through the complicated world of friendship, dating, and other activities.

It also offers some insight into the way men allegedly understand and/or misinterpret the unwritten rules by which women should live by and how this impacts the way they communicate with each other.

The wide-array of cast members, comedy styles, and subject matter create some funny moments, but the frequent sexual references, crude jokes, and gender and racial/ethnic stereotyping often used to get laughs aren’t for everyone.

Nonetheless, it offers viewers a chance to hear what people have to say about gender-related subjects that folks often think about but never really discuss.

For one Leyden alum, taking on sensitive issues was part of what made her high school experience so memorable.

Everyone dreams of landing their dream job and pursuing something they are genuinely passionate about, and for a 1998 Leyden alum it actually happened.
