“American Horror Story” Season 3

American Horror Story Season 3

Fiona Goode, the aging supreme witch, pours herself a drink after she wipes the blood off of her hands onto her butler’s handkerchief. She takes a seat and watches as Spaulding cleans up her mess. He rolls up Madison Montgomery’s body in the rug she was murdered on not five minutes ago as she lights a cigarette and sips from her wine glass. A priceless scene, as you can see Madison’s sparkly silver stilettos sticking out of the end of the rolled up rug.

Episode four of American Horror Story: Coven, the third season of the series, aired on October 30th, continuing to shock viewers and adding to the series’ high body count of which Madison Montgomery is just the latest victim.

The season premiere aired October 9th and was the most watched telecast of the series ever, reaching 5.54 million total viewers according to Nielsen.

This season focuses on witchcraft and voodoo and tells the story of the witches attending Miss Robichaux’s Academy for Exceptional Young Ladies in New Orleans, a school designed to train and protect the remaining witches. It also follows the ongoing feud between the witches and the Voodoos on the other side of town. The episodes take place in present day as well as flash back to past events as early as the 1800’s that define events currently happening in the show.

Coven’s cast includes returning members as well as stars all new to the series this season. One of the returning cast members being Jessica Lange, who has won and been nominated for many awards for her roles in the past two seasons.

Newcomers to this season include Emma Roberts, Angela Bassett and Kathy Bates, the latter two who portray real-life historical figures, Marie Laveau, an actual voodoo practitioner, and Delphine LaLaurie, a southern socialite known for her torture of slaves.

Another big draw this season is the returning love story between Evan Peters and Taissa Farmiga. Peters plays the role of a deceased frat boy brought back to life in a Frankenstein-esque way, and Farmiga is a witch who had just recently discovered her powers, some of which are deadly.

This Romeo and Juliet romance is almost a continuation for fans of their characters’, Tate and Violet’s, story in season one.

Junior Michelle Hathaway is just one of the many students here at Leyden who have become hooked on the series saying that this season, she “likes the theme of voodoo and witchcraft and that Even Peters and Taissa Farmiga are back. It already seems better directed than the last season.”

She also loves how the series makes subtle references to real life murders and “horror stories.”

In season one, the girl murdered in what became known as the 1947 “Black Dahlia Murder” appears as a character, and another episode also makes a reference to the Manson Family Killings: just two of the many references made in that season.

The season continues with tonight’s episode at 9 p.m. on FX where Zoe, Queenie, and Nan, three of the witches residing in the Academy make contact with a dark spirit trapped there.
