Speech Students Shine At Downers Grove South Tournament

Six out of fifteen Speech Club students placed in various events on Saturday, Nov. 13, at the Downers Grove South tournament.

The tournament was only for speech students who were performing for the first year in their events.

“At this event everyone was at the same level,” said William Mitchell, one of the coaches for Speech Team.

The tournament at Downers Grove was a huge event that attracted over 300 competitors. Of the fifteen Leyden students that competed six of them placed including sophomore Noe Rodriguez, who got first place in poetry reading and tied for second in radio speaking.

Some of the students that competed had been working on and memorizing their pieces for the past six weeks. The pieces, which averaged around seven to eight minutes, were memorized and recited in front of an audience of over 300 people.

Students who are interested in joining Speech Team and attending events like these should talk to Mr. Mitchell at East or Karen Schumpp at West.

“We are willing to accept anybody during the season,” Mr. Mitchell emphasised. “[This is a great way to] explore talents through different events.”
