From tutoring after school to teaching full-time at East Leyden High School, Ms. Magherebi’s journey shows her passion for education, her love for social studies, and her dedication to helping students understand the world around them.
Ms. Magherebi is a social studies teacher at East Leyden High School who believes it is important for students to understand government and global issues. She has five years of teaching experience. For her first three years, she taught at her former high school, where she received a lot of support. After that, she transferred to East Leyden, where she continues to grow as an educator. Along with teaching, Ms. Magherebi values staying true to her religion while balancing her responsibilities at school.
Before becoming a teacher, Ms. Magherebi began her career by tutoring. “At first, I worked at a tutoring center, and I also did a lot of tutoring in school,” she said. “After that, when I applied to college, I enrolled in teaching and started taking teaching classes. I also applied for the Golden Apple Scholarship.” As part of her preparation, she observed classrooms and completed student teaching during her last year of college before officially becoming a social studies teacher.
Originally, Ms. Magherebi planned to teach elementary school. However, her experiences in high school helped her realize she preferred working with older students. “At first I thought I wanted to teach elementary for a really long time,” she explained. “But when I was in high school, I was in the Future Teachers of America club, where we shadowed teachers. That’s when I realized I didn’t like teaching younger kids, and I decided I wanted to teach high school social studies.”
Ms. Magherebi has always had an interest in social studies. Even though memorization was sometimes difficult, she enjoyed learning about how the world works. “I always liked social studies, even when I wasn’t the best at memorizing,” she said. “Learning about government and the world and understanding why things are the way they are was really interesting to me.”
She also believes social studies is one of the most important subjects taught in school. “The reason our lives are the way they are is because of our government,” Ms. Magherebi said. “Teaching teens how to be involved and informed is a really important skill they need to have.”
Teaching has been Ms. Magherebi’s dream job since she was young. “I always wanted to be a teacher, even since elementary school,” she said. “I really liked school, so I wanted to try teaching.”
Like many educators, Ms. Magherebi has faced challenges along the way. One of her biggest struggles is grading while keeping up with lesson planning. “I know I struggle with grading because I’m so busy planning lessons,” she admitted. “It has gotten easier the more I’ve taught, but it can still be stressful when I get a new class.”
Ms. Magherebi is also dedicated to practicing her religion. She makes time to pray during lunch or free periods, and during Ramadan, she fasts every day while continuing to teach.
In conclusion, Ms. Magherebi chose to teach social studies because she believes it is essential for students to understand government and global issues. Although she faced challenges along the way, her love for the subject and passion for teaching guided her from tutoring to becoming a full-time high school teacher. After teaching for three years at her former high school, she now continues her teaching journey at East Leyden High School.
