Before the first period bell rings, students line up waiting to scan their IDs – a new policy plan designed to ensure a safer environment for students is made. Every school morning, Leyden security is required to have students scan their student IDs to enter the school. “I feel a bit weird about it, because it’s something new and I know it may slow down the entry time into school due to scan into school so it’s a bit frustrating,” says senior Guadalupe Iniguez. This new policy brings mixed opinions among students at West Leyden, some students have spoken up about this new change. Senior Serenity Burns expresses, “I believe that the new scanning policy in the morning will affect how people get inoto class on time because if you’re late and there’s many other kids scanning in and trying to get their IDs outside” Students are concerned how this new change will interfer with arriving on time to the first bell. West Leyden Security Susana Molina says , “I like it because it’s more safe for the kids that are coming into the building, so we can know who the student is. So that’s why I like it.” This new change has also given security a better and effective way to keep students safe when entering the school. “I believe that it’ll make students feel better and safer knowing everyone that attends school has to scan in” says senior Stefany Corona. With this new policy students have a better comfort in knowing that the school is secure in who is in the building. West Leyden Security Phill Ruch said, “I think scanning is a good idea, because what it does is it notifies the school who’s at school and who isn’t at school. So like, if a parent calls, we know that their student has checked in, versus them dropping them off and maybe not checking in on time. And it also alerts us. If someone is not supposed to be in school, it will give us an alert saying this person is on an out of school suspension and we won’t let them in. So people who aren’t supposed to be here can’t just show their ID and walk in. It’s good to scan them and we can identify who’s supposed to be or who isn’t.” West Leyden’s security system has upgraded and improved for the better of all people in the building. “The safest thing we can do for our students is to make sure that every student who comes into the building is one of our students. By using scanning, we are able to say who is here at any given moment.” Says West Leydens Dean Mr. Carrero. This new change at West Leyden is meant to serve as a better change in our schools safety system to ensure the safety of our Leyden eagles.
